Utterly captivating, moving, mesmerising, beautiful. The episode with Churchill as the focus had me in tears at the end. Claire Foy is astoundingly good, a masterpiece of dignity. Possibly one of the finest dramas of its era. And I might add series 2 is just as good but very different. You will never think the same way about the Queen, or the Duke. In fact any respect you may have will be magnified and enhanced. Even an anti-monarchist such as I will never loose the respect for the Queen this reinforces, it makes you realise that nobody can or ever will fill her shoes when the time comes.

I bought this for a friend and fellow English teacher and she kindly let me watch it first. I was only planning on watching one or two episodes just to see what the fuss was about, but I watched them all and will be looking out for series 2 on DVD as well. I found it fascinating, and it sent me looking up all sorts of aspects of fairly recent British history which I wouldn't have done otherwise.

Bought for my Dad who doesn’t have Netflix, will get him season 2 as soon as it’s out. Fascinating, brilliantly cast and researched. Have even got my teenage children hooked as it’s educational as well as being an intriguing insight into love, life and relationships however privileged you are.

Brilliant series. It covers the childhood of the then Princess Elizabeth, the Abdication of her uncle and the sudden huge change of circumstances as her father becomes King.
Then her marriage to Prince Philip, the sad early death of King George and her becoming Queen Elizabeth the second when still a very young woman.
The casting and acting of every member of the cast is marvellous.

This is fascinating stuff. You will find yourself wondering how many of the scenes portrayed actually happened and how many are just conjecture. Whatever the case, this is thought provoking stuff. The transformative effect of such responsibility on the Queen must have be immense, and the fact that she inherited this rather than chose to do the job, makes her position all the more fascinating. This series has the potential to significantly change the way you view the Queen and also the institution of the British monarchy as a whole.

No expense spared in making this series. Claire Foy is her usual superb self. Matt Smith sheds a very different light on the personality of the Duke of Edinburgh. Eileen Atkins is a wonderful Queen Mary, Ben Miles cannot be beaten as Peter Townsend, Pip Torrens is the perfect Tommy Lascelles, and Vanessa Kirkby brings out surprising (at least to me) aspects of the character of Princess Margaret.

If you are interested in the British Royal Family, there is nothing better. If you aren't interested in the British Royal Family (guilty!) it's still worth it.

This review, and star rating, are for the series NOT the DVD; the DVD was a gift to my sister in the UK who I've been nagging for months to watch the series, right after I'd finished binge-watching Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix. Eventually I was left with no recourse but to send the DVD, and now I'm back to nagging her to watch the d****d DVD! On the other hand, it's a good excuse to Skype.
Re: the series, it's excellent, beautifully acted, and totally absorbing. It's also a tad gossipy -- we're not talking full-blown tabloid but just enough to keep the viewer coming back for more. It doesn’t pretend to be a “docu-drama.” “The Crown,” Seasons 1 and 2, was a welcome respite to the cringe-worthy, real life drama taking place in my country, across The Pond.
