Formally I was an International Rugby Union Prop Forward. But my grounding started a lot earlier than that. My father, Courtney John is my inspiration and has installed in me a desire to succeed. From an early age I helped out/worked at my Dad’s business, (Llanalec Precision Engineering Co Ltd) a major manufacturer of parts for the Challenger Tank for the Ministry of Defence. I believe that working with my father from a young age gave me the drive and ambition to pursue a professional career.
At the age of 18 I began playing senior Rugby for Llanelli Rugby Football Club. By the age of 20 I was capped for Wales. This made me the second youngest prop forward in the history of the Welsh game, behind my good friend David Young, who is Wasps’ current coach. By the time I was 22 I moved to Cardiff Blues, having been approached by the Chairman Mr Peter Thomas. I made over 100 first team appearances for Llanelli and a further 100 for Cardiff. I am very proud to say that I also represented Wales 18 times.
In 2002 a car crash brought my professional rugby to an abrupt end after suffering a serious neck injury. At this point I had to re-evaluate my life and so I began a construction/development company. This helped me to fill the massive void left by the end of my Rugby career.
I have since completed many major developments, to include a 2500 square foot residential development in Rudry for Mr Peter Thomas and I am currently running a 10,000 square foot refurbishment and new build at 18/19 Park Place, Cardiff. I have also worked for many other fantastic local business men: Mr Andrew McCarthy of Garrison Barclay Estates and most recently Mr Andrew Giles and Mr Richard Williams of Park Estates, Cardiff.
With over 10 years of successful Residential and Commercial projects under my belt, with a value from £10,000 to £1,000,000 plus, I feel that what started out as a dream is now most certainly a reality.
