Mahadevan and Nithyasree during happier times.
Classical singer Nithyasree’s husband Mahadevan (45) committed suicide on Thursday afternoon by jumping into the Adyar River after parking his car on the Kotturpuram bridge. Police officers attributed it to depression.
According to police, around 12.15 pm, Mahadevan sat behind the wheel of his luxury sedan and started driving with his driver Suresh alongside. Midway through the bridge, he pulled over and parked the car. After both alighted, Mahadevan locked the car, put the key in his pocket, walked across the sidewalk to the parapet wall and jumped into the Adyar River around 12.30 pm, police said. It all happened in a flash and the driver couldn’t respond.
While passersby alerted police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel at Kotturpuram, driver Suresh called up Nithyasree, who rushed to the spot. As she was sobbing inconsolably, the police advised her to go back. She then left for her home at Vellaiyan Street in Kotturpuram.
Around 1.30 pm, Mahadevan’s body was fished out of the river and taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him ‘brought dead’. Kotturpuram Police Inspector N Elangovan told Express that Mahadevan was being treated for his depression at a multi-specialty hospital for the past five years.
“Mahadevan’s mental condition worsened after his mother Shanthi passed away in April. When he stopped the car in the middle of the bridge, his driver thought Mahadevan wanted to take a leak, but he jumped into the river,” he said. Nithyasree is the grand-daughter of legendary Carnatic vocalist D K Pattammal. Mahadevan was an engineer with a private firm. They have two daughters — Thejasree (8) and Thanujasree (6).

This shows that behind the facade of this so-called High Society people, there is so much unhappiness and worry going on, despite all the money and fame and Ego they have. Added is all the hype that the media portrays. This was seen in the case of Maniratnam's brother GV and the Heart Surgeon Cherian. Even high profile people need their personal space and time. In the Carnatic music world, behind the curtains, there is infedelity, alcohol and financial nonsense going on. It is all about so-called fame and glory, and life sucks for many rich people. Most of them are lonely and depressed and want outlets. The sad part here is, is Mahadevan drank mouthfuls of pee and dump, from the dirty Adyar river before moving to the next world. What a fate, even for a guy rich with fame!

Depression can affect anyone. Soial class has nothing to do with it. One of the visible impact of depression is the toll it takes on one livelywood; with affluence the impact may not be visible. Please don't post comments on subject you have no idea.

Truth - Please understand that even the rich and famous are human beings and go thru their every day lives like you and me. They worked hard to be where they are and therefore do not segregrate them as a different species. (Depression in man is a societal issue we must address immediately. I am sure you heard about the school shooting in the US where the 20-year old was mentally ill. Depression exists across the globe amongst all classes/ages/color and that is what we need to look at). I think you are adding insult to injury by your insensitive comments, especially at this time to Smt. Nityashree who has consoled so many by her soothing music and contributed to the music world. Please love your fellow beings and be supportive. This itself will foster a healthier society. May God be with the entire family at this time of sorrow and pain.

Truth is like a stray dog. Nobody will miss his sarcastic, insensible opinions and thus a good riddance.

Truth's writing contains truth. People who have replied to his comments only demonstrate that they are not used to logic & truth. Truth hurts; Truth is bitter. People who are after materialistic success should realize that for a happy life we need only so much. If we see the real life in the celebrity world, we'll realize how happy an ordinary hard working, honest man is.

Many people may abject to what you said. But, I personally feel, what you are saying is right. When people start giving more importance to materialistic pleasure, they find no solace in it. These pleasures will only lead them to such disastrous ending. If people can differentiate between the need and desire, then they start living this life beautifully. I am on the path of understanding it and I see so much of change in myself. And, of course, I am lot more happier than I used to be.

It is a great tragedy o a personal level, espacially for Nithyashree and her daughters. Let us not belittle that by intemperate statements. I must add that fame and fortune cause sometimes the feelings of being ignored and neglected on one of the partners, leading to inferiority complex, friction and depression. May God bring peace to the Mahadevan family.

whatever truth posted has some elements of truth in it . the music world too has its own games of power and community centeredness . and it is this own community centeredness that uprightly and intolerantly criticises whathever mr.truth is saying.there is a tamil saying the more u keep on diigging even ural may move by inches. so what caused and fostered his depression.working in a psu bank with professional qualification but surrounded by a particular community of even normal graduates i know how cut throat they can be. Ram there are some of us who tolerate truth remember we are tolerating u also right

The utter nonsense that came out of the poisonous pen of the untruthful Truth can be only possible if he was brought up in an atmosphere of Hate which is very true of the evil desert cults. Unless the world is rid of these cults humankind will not get peace. One is forced to conclude this as his underlying hatred for Carnatic Music is evident.

Truth, depression can come to anyone for any cause. When depression is at its high, the affected go to the extent of committing suicide by using any mode, that they see first. Soceity ,profession, education etc does not come here. Try to see things from a neutral and educated manner ; its very easy to generalise things and pass humiliating comments. However it is definetely not a civilized approach.
