Galaxy Crush Nashville in Second Round

FULLERTON, CA (Wednesday, June 27, 2001) -- Galaxy midfielder Marvin Quijano put on a brilliant performance having a hand in four goals to lead Los Angeles to a 5-0 victory over the Nashville Metros (A-League) at Titan Stadium. Midfielders Peter Vagenas and Simon Elliott each capitalized on penalty kicks earned by Quijano, while Sasha Victorine added a great strike in the first half. With the victory, the Galaxy advance to the third round of the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and will take on the Seattle Sounders Select (PDL) on July 11 at a site to be determined.

"'I don't know what to tell you. I mean, I just went out there to have fun," said Quijano. "I had confidence that he (Victorine) was going to cross it and just followed it up and scored with my right foot. My first right footed goal ever!''

A native of El Salvador, Quijano tallied first-ever U.S. Open Cup goal for the opening strike of the match off a blistering right-footed volley in the 24th minute. On the left wing, Sasha Victorine sent a long high cross to the far post, where Quijano timed a first time shot down off the ground and over Nashville goalkeeper Cole Burgman.

"I thought Marvin was the player of the game today," stated Galaxy Head Coach Sigi Schmid. "He was outstanding for us. He's playing with a lot of confidence and he is training with a lot of confidence and it's showing in his game.''

Los Angeles added to its lead in the 38th minute as midfielder Peter Vagenas converted the penalty kick. Once again, it was Quijano being dangerous inside the box before being knocked down by Metros' defender James Wall.

In the second half, Victorine scored the Galaxy's third goal of the night off brilliant run straight up the middle before blasting a left footed shot into the lower right corner of the net. Danny Pena started the play slipping an entry pass for Quijano, who flicked the ball on for a cutting Victorine.

Elliott, who came on as a second half substitute, added two goals on the night, converting a penalty kick in the 86th minute off another Quijano earned penalty in the box. Then, Elliott added his second tally in the 90th minute with an excellent finish of a Mauricio Cienfuegos pass.

In MLS action, the Galaxy hits the road on Friday traveling to the Cotton Bowl to take on the Dallas Burn on Saturday, June 30, 2001, (1:00 p.m. PT kickoff).
