Chloé Zhao (Chinese: 赵婷; pinyin: Zhào Tíng, born March 31, 1982)[1] is a Chinese-born director, producer and screenwriter. She is known for her movie Nomadland (2020), winning a Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award and Academy Award for Best Director. This made Zhao the second of three women to win Best Director[2] and the first woman of color to win Best Director at the Oscars.[3] She is also the first Asian woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes.[4][5] She then directed the 2025 movie Hamnet, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama and was nominated for another Academy Award for Best Director.

Personal life

Chloé Zhao was born Zhao Ting (赵婷; Zhào Tíng) on 31 March 1982, in Beijing, China. Her father, Zhao Yuji (赵玉吉; Zhào Yùjí), was a successful executive at Shougang Group.[6] Although she was still learning English at the time, her parents sent her to Brighton College in 1998 at the age of 15.[7][8] Zhao later moved to Los Angeles by herself in 2000.[9] Afterwards, she attended Mount Holyoke College.[10]

Zhao lives in Ojai, California. She was in a relationship with cinematographer Joshua James Richards until 2025.[11][12]

Zhao said that her neurodivergence is a "superpower" for her.[13]
