Vincent Arthur Smith

Vincent Arthur Smith, CIE (Dublino, 3 giugno 1843 – Oxford, 6 febbraio 1920[1]), è stato un indologo e storico irlandese, nonché membro del Servizio civile indiano e curatore d'arte. È stato una delle figure di spicco della storiografia indiana durante l'Impero anglo-indiano[2].
Negli anni Novanta del XIX secolo, ebbe un ruolo fondamentale nello smascherare i falsi di Alois Anton Führer,[3][4] che all’epoca lavorava per l’Archaeological Survey of India e che Smith sorprese in flagrante mentre realizzava iscrizioni false.
Biografia
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Smith nacque a Dublino il 3 giugno 1843, quando la città faceva parte del Regno Unito di Gran Bretagna e Irlanda. Suo padre era Aquilla Smith, figura ben nota negli ambienti medici e numismatici di Dublino e Londra.[1]
Dopo essersi laureato al Trinity College di Dublino, nel 1871 superò l’esame finale per l’Indian Civil Service,[5] classificandosi «in testa alla graduatoria», e prestò servizio in quello che oggi è l’Uttar Pradesh fino al 1900, ricoprendo i ruoli tipici dell’ICS, fino a raggiungere la carica di Segretario Capo del governo nel 1898 e a diventare Commissario nello stesso anno. Durante tutto questo periodo fu un prolifico autore di saggi sulla storia indiana e, nel 1900, lasciò anticipatamente il servizio per dedicarsi maggiormente a questa attività, facendo ritorno in Inghilterra.[1]
Trasferitosi inizialmente a Cheltenham, nel 1910 Smith si stabilì a Oxford, dove entrò a far parte del St John’s College e fu nominato curatore dell’Indian Institute.[1][6]
Dopo il pensionamento Smith scrisse diverse monografie sulla storia indiana.[7] Tra queste figuravano due monografie dedicate rispettivamente agli imperatori Ashoka e Akbar, che egli continuò a revisionare più volte, aggiornandole alla luce delle nuove ricerche e informazioni.[7] Scrisse e pubblicò inoltre due volumi esaustivi sulla storia indiana, The Early History of India e The Oxford History of India, oltre a un libro sulla storia delle belle arti in India e nello Sri Lanka.[1]
Smith fu insignito del titolo di Compagno dell’Ordine dell’Impero Indiano[8] e gli fu conferito un dottorato dal Trinity College di Dublino nel 1919.[1]
Morì a Oxford il 6 febbraio 1920.[9]
