The development of the university after its recognition by the Holy See and its official accreditation by the Spanish State led to the creation of faculties, schools, research institutes and professional centres in fields such as law, medicine, business, communication, engineering, humanities, architecture and theology.<ref name="hist" /> The first phase of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra began in the early 1960s, while IESE expanded its executive and postgraduate management education activity from Barcelona. The University of Navarra is a prestigious private Catholic research university located on the southeast border of Pamplona, Navarre, Spain. It was founded in 1952 by Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei, as a corporate work of the apostolate of Opus Dei. The University of Navarra is among the best private universities in Spain.[3] The University of Navarra was third in the "European Teaching Rankings of 2019" following the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge by Times Higher Education's International Rankings.[4] Moreover, the university is ranked #1 in the "CYD Ranking" list of Spanish universities in 2026.[5] It holds a particularly respected position in the fields of business, economics, medicine, and healthcare.[6]

Through its seven campuses in Pamplona, San Sebastián, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, New York City and São Paulo, the university confers official undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through faculties, schools, institutes, its graduate business school, IESE Business School, Tecnun School of Engineering, ISSA School of Applied Management, ISEM Fashion Business School and other centres and institutions.[7]

The university also runs the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, a teaching hospital, and the Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada (CIMA), a biomedical research centre focused on areas such as oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular sciences, gene therapy and hepatology.[6] CIMA was accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence in 2026.[8]

History

The institution was founded as the Estudio General de Navarra on 17 October 1952,[9] with the encouragement of Saint Josemaría Escrivá. It began as a School of Law with 48 students and eight professors, under the direction of Ismael Sánchez Bella. The founder described the ideals he wanted to transmit in the university:

We want learned men to be formed here, with a Christian understanding of life; we want this environment, suitable for quiet reflection, to cultivate science rooted in its most solid principles, so that this light might shine over all the roads of knowledge

After the foundation of the Faculty of Philosophy in 1955 and the Business School, IESE, in 1958, the Estudio General de Navarra was established as a university by the Holy See on 6 August 1960, and Escrivá was designated as the Great Chancellor. The university received official accreditation from the Spanish State on 8 September 1962.[10]

The development of the university after its recognition by the Holy See and its official accreditation by the Spanish State led to the creation of faculties, schools, research institutes and professional centres in fields such as law, medicine, business, communication, engineering, humanities, architecture and theology.[10] The first phase of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra began in the early 1960s, while IESE expanded its executive and postgraduate management education activity from Barcelona. Over time, the university consolidated a multi-campus structure, with academic and institutional activity in Pamplona, San Sebastián, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, New York City and São Paulo.[7]

In 2004, the university opened the Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada, a biomedical research centre linked to the university and its medical ecosystem. In 2015, the Museum of the University of Navarra was inaugurated by King Felipe VI. The museum houses a collection donated to the university by María Josefa Huarte Beaumont, including works by Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky, and was designed by Rafael Moneo.[11][12]

Students

In 2023, the university had a total of 12,054 students, including 1,758 international students. Of these, 9,207 were pursuing a bachelor's degree, 2,807 were master's degree students, and 1,011 were PhD students.[13]

The university has cooperation agreements with other universities, including the University of Washington, the University of Hong Kong and the University of Edinburgh.[14]

Campus

Most of the facilities and centres are located in Pamplona,[15] with the exception of IESE Business School, which is based in Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, New York and São Paulo;[16] the School of Engineering, Tecnun, based in Donostia-San Sebastián,[17] and the ISEM Fashion Business School, located in Madrid.[18]

In January 2015, the Museum of the University of Navarra was inaugurated by King Felipe VI and houses a collection donated to the university by María Josefa Huarte Beaumont.[19] This collection, regarded as one of the major collections of contemporary art in Spain, includes works by Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky, among other artists.[20] The architect in charge of the project was Rafael Moneo.[21]

The University of Navarra is organised into faculties, schools and academic centres distributed across several campuses. The university faculties and schools have researchers in different areas. Its centres and institutes carry out research in the sciences and the humanities, alongside the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, the Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada and the Institute for Culture and Society.[22][23]

The University of Navarra is one of the Spanish private universities with the strongest research profile. According to El País, it was the only private university in Spain included in the Shanghai Ranking, a ranking strongly focused on scientific output, and in 2024 it recorded €117 million in operating research income.[5] The same article noted that the 2026 CYD Ranking placed the university in leading positions in science, teaching and international outlook.[5]

CIMA was accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence in 2026, a distinction awarded in Spain to research centres with international scientific standing.[24]

Rankings and reputation

The University of Navarra appears in several national and international rankings. Its position varies according to methodology, scope and the number of institutions considered. The university maintains an institutional page summarising its results in rankings related to teaching, research, employability, international outlook and reputation among employers.[25]

Times Higher Education describes the University of Navarra as one of Spain's most prestigious universities, with a distinguished record in teaching and research.[6] In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, it was placed in the 251–300 band worldwide. By subject, it ranked 92nd in Business and Economics, 151–175 in Law and 176–200 in Medical and Health.[6]

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, the University of Navarra was ranked joint 279th worldwide. The same QS profile placed it 29th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, joint 411th in the QS Sustainability Ranking and 12th in the Europe University Rankings - Southern Europe.[26]

In the 2026 CYD Ranking, the University of Navarra headed the list of twelve Spanish universities highlighted for teaching, research, employability and international outlook.[5] The university's institutional rankings page also highlights its first position in Spain in the CYD ranking and its first position in Spain for employer reputation.[25]

Among its linked centres, IESE Business School is highlighted by the university as one of the world's leading institutions in executive education according to Financial Times, while the Clínica Universidad de Navarra is described by the university as the highest-reputation private hospital in Spain according to the Monitor de Reputación Sanitaria.[25]

Since its founding in 1952, the University of Navarra and its linked centres, including IESE Business School, have educated people who have held senior positions in government, diplomacy, business, journalism, academia, the Church, science, law, media and public life. Alumni and people educated at the university or at centres linked to it include a prime minister of Spain, a president of the Government of Catalonia, national ministers in Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom, an archbishop of Los Angeles, a judge of the European Court of Human Rights, business executives, academics, writers, explorers and audiovisual creators.

Among politically prominent alumni are Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain; Salvador Illa, President of the Government of Catalonia; Arancha González Laya, former Spanish minister of foreign affairs; Pedro Morenés, former Spanish minister of defence and former ambassador to the United States; António Pires de Lima, former minister of economy of Portugal; and Ruth Kelly, former British cabinet minister. In the Church and public life, alumni include José Horacio Gómez, Archbishop of Los Angeles. The university has also been associated with notable academic and intellectual figures. Times Higher Education identifies philosopher Leonardo Polo, physicist Pedro Miguel Etxenike and Ruth Kelly among the university's notable alumni and academic figures.[6] Etxenike studied at the University of Navarra before continuing his academic career at the University of Cambridge and becoming one of Spain's best-known physicists.[29]
