City of Memphis Solid Waste customers can take large furniture, tires off the rim, and other non-hazardous waste to a City collection center or Republic Services landfill. Customers may dispose of up to one truckload per month at the landfill with an MLGW bill showing payment of the City Solid Waste fee.

This summer, 23 Urban Fellows worked alongside the City of Memphis Division of Engineering, gaining firsthand experience with the infrastructure that keeps our city moving.

From roadways and traffic signals to sewer and drainage systems, the Fellows learned how thoughtful designs, inspections, and planning directly serve Memphis communities. Along the way, they strengthened their communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, and discovered new possibilities for making a difference in the city they call home.

Yesterday, we proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting of Ida B. Wells Plaza, a new public space honoring one of Memphis’ most courageous and influential voices.

Ida B. Wells’ story is deeply connected to our city. She began her journalism career in Memphis, where she fearlessly exposed injustice, challenged discrimination, and used her voice to advocate for truth—even when doing so put her own life at risk. Her unwavering commitment to justice helped shape the civil rights movement and inspired generations to stand up for what is right.

Ida B. Wells Plaza serves as a lasting reminder that our public spaces carry the stories of the people who shaped Memphis. By preserving and sharing these stories, we honor our past while inspiring future generations to lead with courage, conviction, and purpose.

Memphis has a powerful history. Yesterday marked another step in ensuring that legacy continues to be seen, remembered, and celebrated.
