Built for the BIGMODE 2026 Game Jam, Aerodynamic Armored Soldier TURBOTROOPER is a Geometry Wars-inspired twin-stick shooter. Piloting the DK B4N-4N4, you are the Turbotrooper.
Fight off enemies, earn the highest score you can, and aim to get to the top of the leaderboard!
The jam's theme was "slick" and for me that came down to look and feel. Bullets (and your shield) pulse to the music, and the mechanic that separates this from other twin-stick shooters is the inclusion of a perfect dodge system. Quickly dodge out of the way of danger, and if you do it at the right moment... enter a slow-motion state to take down enemies with precision.
I definitely have a lot of ideas for expanding this, including a story mode that takes inspiration from classic anime like Gundam, Armored Trooper Votoms, and Macross. Stay tuned for more info.
Game built by yours truly. Sound effects are based off samples purchased via a Splice membership. Art created in Affinity Studio and Blender. Music created in Ableton Live. Game developed in Unity.
Gameplay Overview
You start out in an enclosed octagon. Enemies will start spawning in shortly after. There are three archetypes of enemies with two variations of each. Killing enemies in quick succession will improve your combo multiplier, 10 enemies gets you 1.1x, etc.
Using the dodge button (see controls below for more info) you can quickly move out of the way of enemies. There's a cooldown on your dodge, and when you're able to dodge again, a notification will appear on screen. Dodging at just the right time near an enemy will allow you to enter a bullet-time state, slowing the game world down and letting you get out of danger.
You start with three shields. When an enemy hits you, you'll lose a shield and enemies with a nearby radius will be destroyed without granting you points. If you get hit by an enemy once your shields are gone it's game over. Aim true, and dodge smartly to avoid collisions and rack up the highest score you can. The top 25 scores are highlighted on the leaderboards.
